CoinbaseCoinbase Global, Inc. · NASDAQ: COIN · Simple trading, Coinbase Advanced, Coinbase One, staking and USDC · US retail customers

Conclusion: Weakly supports · Not a finding of deception or unlawful conduct · No score assigned

Leaving is easy. Knowing what you paid is the hard part.

Coinbase does not make it especially hard to leave. The stronger CHI finding is earlier in the relationship: its default Simple trading flow uses a variable spread whose rate Coinbase does not publish, while Coinbase Advanced — available in the same account at no extra cost — uses transparent maker/taker pricing and no spread.

01 · Two prices for one coin

The same asset, the same account, the same minute. Two ways to buy it.

Coinbase’s annual report describes “Simple trading” and “Advanced trading”, and says Simple fees are generally higher.6 The CHI point is that Advanced is one tab away.

Simple · the default flow

Easier to use. Less to see.

  • The flow a retail customer sees first in the app
  • An explicit Coinbase Fee may apply, varying by payment method, size and asset1
  • A spread is included in the quoted price1
  • The spread rate is not published, and may vary for similar transactions
  • Coinbase may retain any excess spread
  • The spread is not itemised in transaction history2
Advanced · the order-book venue

More to learn. Everything on the screen.

  • Available in the same account, with the same login
  • No subscription required
  • No spread: orders meet the order book directly1
  • Published maker/taker fees: 0.50% / 0.90% at the US entry tier3,4
  • The fee is shown on the order preview before execution5
Two prices for one asset, segmented by sophistication.

Segmented by sophistication. Coinbase positions Advanced for higher-volume traders.6 The less transparent product is aimed at less experienced customers, and it is the default. CHI reading

02 · What Coinbase actually says about the spread

The total is on the screen. The rate is not anywhere.

Coinbase discloses that a spread exists. Its fees page says Coinbase “includes a spread in the quoted price” on Simple buys and sells, and in the conversion rate on converts. The spread lets Coinbase lock a quote while the order processes, “may vary for similar transactions”, and its excess may be retained.1

“Coinbase may retain any excess spread.”

Coinbase Help, “Coinbase pricing and fees disclosures”, read 17 Oct 2026
  1. Before you confirmTotal price shownThe previewed price includes the spread; the fee is a separate line2
  2. On the previewTooltipThe spread is visible by tapping beside the price1
  3. Published scheduleNoneNo percentage or range; the older “approximately 0.50%” is gone
  4. After the tradeNot itemisedUser Agreement §3.7 excludes the spread from history2
The precise issue.

Coinbase shows the total transaction price before confirmation. The issue is not that the total cost is invisible. The issue is that the customer cannot independently see or reconstruct the spread rate from a published schedule or a later receipt. CHI reading

Litigation, not findings. A California class action, Khan v. Coinbase, alleges the spread is inadequately disclosed. The appeal court ruled only that the case stays in court; there is no merits ruling, and no regulator finding.28 Allegation

03 · Coinbase’s own evidence

When customers leave Simple, Coinbase earns hundreds of millions less.

In its annual report for 2025, Coinbase explained a fall in consumer transaction revenue. It attributed most of the decline to customers moving from Simple to Advanced and Coinbase One.6

$384.4MFY2025 decline in consumer transaction revenue

SEC filing
Coinbase attributed the decline “to a lower average blended fee rate, primarily due to changes in the mix of Trading Volume from Simple users to Advanced and Coinbase One users who pay lower average fees.”6 Its fourth-quarter letter repeated the explanation.7

How CHI reads it. Not as an admission about Simple pricing, but as Coinbase’s own confirmation that the Simple-versus-Advanced pricing difference is economically meaningful at scale. Because Coinbase publishes no Simple fee or spread rate, this page uses that attribution instead of a modelled per-trade example. CHI reading

04 · Simple vs Advanced

Simple is easier and less transparent. Advanced is harder and more transparent.

05 · Why this matters, and why it is bounded

Coinbase has not eliminated the fairer venue. It has made the costlier, less transparent path the default.

Ordinary segmentationNormalConvenience products often cost more than order-book access.
Material opacityRealThe Simple spread rate is unpublished, and the default gives less transparency than Advanced.
Bounded hostilityLimitedAdvanced is free and one tab away, in the same account.

Why the verdict is Weakly Supports. All three are true at once. A published rate was withdrawn, but the total cost is shown before confirmation and a transparent alternative is free. That is a pricing concern, not control over the customer’s money. CHI reading

06 · Coinbase One

“Zero trading fees” does not mean zero trading cost.

The headline carries its own qualification: “Pay zero trading fees on hundreds of assets (a spread applies)”.9 Coinbase’s annual report calls the benefit “limited reduced transaction fee trading”.6

Removed for members

  • The explicit Coinbase Fee on eligible Simple trades
  • Up to $500 a month on Basic ($4.99), $10,000 on Preferred ($29.99), unlimited on Premium ($299.99)9

Still applies

  • The spread, on every Simple trade and convert
  • Regular fees above the plan’s monthly limit
  • The 1% Simple limit-order fee
  • Advanced, DEX and derivatives trading, which are excluded10

Precise wording. Coinbase One removes the explicit Coinbase Fee on eligible Simple trades up to the plan limit. It does not remove the spread. The exclusions are disclosed; the point is that a member still cannot see the rate of the largest remaining cost before the preview. CHI reading

07 · The protection change

The marquee benefit fell from “up to $1M” to $10,000. The price did not move.

Coinbase One launched with takeover protection advertised at up to $1 million. Since December 2024, new Preferred members at the same $29.99 get $10,000.12,13

2021 – 2023 marketing · $29.99Up to $1MAdvertised at launch13
From Dec 2024 · new Preferred · $29.99$10,000Basic $1,000 · Premium $250,0009,12
Existing membersGrandfatheredEarlier subscribers kept their terms13

Current protection is real but narrow: it needs a passkey or security key and a 45-day claim with police and IC3 reports, excludes transfers a customer was tricked into making, and “does not provide insurance”.11

Precise wording. Coinbase reduced the marquee protection benefit for new Preferred subscribers from “up to $1M” to $10,000 while leaving the plan price unchanged. The harm falls on later subscribers, not existing ones. CHI reading

08 · Staking

A disclosed commission that can change after you commit.

Coinbase keeps 35% of staking rewards; Coinbase One tiers cut that to as low as 25.25%. The rate is published and the APY shown is net of it.1,14 CHI does not treat the 35% itself as hostile. A disclosed price is a price.

“Coinbase may change these published commissions at any time, including after your assets have been staked.”

Coinbase User Agreement (US), staking terms, last updated 22 Jul 2026

That clause is the CHI-relevant mechanism: a customer who stakes at one rate may later see another deducted, and the remedy is to unstake, which takes about ten days for ETH.2,14 In the customer’s favour, Coinbase reimburses slashing caused by its own validators.15

09 · USDC rewards

A balance-retention incentive moved behind a paid membership.

On 15 December 2025, USDC rewards ended for customers without Coinbase One. Members kept them.16,9

Under its agreement with Circle, USDC’s issuer, Coinbase earns more reserve income on USDC held on its platform.17 In the fourth quarter of 2025, an average $18 billion of USDC held in Coinbase products produced $172 million of revenue, against $192 million from $58 billion held elsewhere.7 Coinbase says rewards exist to “incentivize on-platform use”.6

Precise wording. Coinbase moved a previously broader balance-retention incentive behind a paid membership. No customer’s USDC was restricted; conversion stayed one-to-one and free.1 CHI reading

10 · Account restrictions

The real issue is discretion, not proven indefinite freezes.

Coinbase’s User Agreement lets it suspend, restrict or terminate service “for any reason at its sole discretion”, on “confidential criteria”, without explaining why.2 A review “typically takes up to 10 business days, and some cases take longer”; no firmer deadline is published.18

Convert to cashUsually yesA restricted account can usually still convert crypto to cash19
Withdraw to a verified bankUsually yes“Security and risk factors” can affect this19
Send crypto off-platformNoBlocked during the restriction; verification “doesn’t always guarantee” removal19

Precise wording. Coinbase reserves broad discretion over restrictions without publishing criteria or a firm deadline, but its documented exit rights are materially stronger than the popular “locked forever” narrative suggests. After termination, customers have 90 days to move assets out.2 CHI reading

In most situations, yes. The exceptions have published triggers.

Why this table matters. It is the main reason the stronger exit-control hypothesis was not validated. CHI reading

12 · ACH holds

Bank-transfer holds are mostly normal.

ACH deposits can be traded at once but not cashed out or sent off-platform until the transfer settles, because bank transfers can be reversed.20

Kraken~7 daysWithdrawal suspension on bank-funded purchases22
Gemini~4–5 daysBusiness days for ACH deposits to clear22
Binance.US~7 daysCut from 10 days in December 202222

The Coinbase-specific residue. Coinbase sets each hold from “account history, payment activity, and transaction history” without publishing the method, and states that “Coinbase Support cannot reduce the hold time”.20 A debit-card deposit avoids the send hold. This is a minor finding. CHI reading

13 · Custody

The custody terms are stronger than the popular narrative.

“Title to Supported Digital Assets shall at all times remain with you,” Coinbase’s contract says; the assets are not Coinbase property or subject to its creditors.2

What the terms and filings say

  • Title stays with the customer, under UCC Article 8 language2
  • Customer assets held “one-to-one at all times”6
  • No lending or rehypothecation “without the customer’s consent”6,8
  • US dollars held in pooled custodial accounts31

What remains with Coinbase

  • The keys, in pooled wallets Coinbase controls2
  • Interest earned on pooled US dollar balances31
  • An untested bankruptcy question, disclosed yearly6,29

Fixed under pressure, 2022. After a May 2022 filing warned customers could be treated as unsecured creditors in a bankruptcy, Coinbase added Article 8 protection to its retail terms in June.29 Ownership is the customer’s by contract; the keys are Coinbase’s by design. CHI reading

14 · Exit

The exit is not the problem.

The hypothesis focused on Coinbase controlling the door. The evidence did not support it strongly.

Account closure feeNone
ACH cash-outFree
USDC to US dollarsAt par
Crypto sendNetwork fee
After termination90 days

Crypto sends carry an estimate of the network fee; USDC converts free below $5 million in 30 days.1 Delistings such as BUSD (2023) and wrapped bitcoin (2024) came with weeks of notice and withdrawals left open.32 Coinbase’s fee pages list no ACH figure; free ACH rests on reviewer reporting.33

15 · Support

Support is not paywalled. Protection is.

Coinbase publishes a 24/7 US phone line for all customers. Coinbase One Preferred adds “24/7 priority support”, which Coinbase does not define.21,9

Precise wording. Coinbase One sells undefined priority support, not access to support itself. What is sold only to members is Account Protection: reimbursement for account-takeover losses. For non-members, reporting an unauthorised transaction “does not guarantee” reimbursement.2,11 Whether federal transfer rules require it for crypto accounts is undecided; the leading Coinbase case went to arbitration.35 CHI reading

Roughly one Coinbase complaint in five concerns money not available when promised; volumes peaked in 2021, at 1,790.23 Narratives were unavailable, so durations cannot be measured. New York’s regulator documented 2021 compliance-review backlogs in a consent order that did not address complaints or support.24

Precise wording. The complaint record shows persistent friction around access to funds, but it does not establish routine indefinite lockouts, and no regulator has found otherwise. CHI reading

17 · Fixed under pressure

Where Coinbase changed course, and what prompted it.

Fixed under pressure

Support and compliance

  • Phone and live messaging support launched in 2021 after a complaint wave.27,23
  • Compliance backlogs remediated under a 2023 New York order.24
  • Article 8 custody protection added in June 2022.29
Fixed under pressure

Fees and reimbursement

  • Advanced fees cut on 16 Sep 2026, citing “customer feedback”.4
  • About 6,000 customers reimbursed after a 2021 account-recovery exploit.34
  • Voluntary reimbursement after the 2025 insider-data incident (section 18).25
Improvement · no pressure link

Lower entry points

  • Coinbase One Basic at $4.99 a month, launched in June 2025.9
  • Pro customers moved to Advanced at the same fees in 2022.30

Not credited. No shorter ACH holds, no Simple spread reduction, no restored free-tier USDC rewards or protection cap. The September 2026 cut only partly reversed the smallest traders’ entry taker fee, reported at 1.20% before it fell to 0.90%.33,3

18 · The 2025 insider incident

Coinbase paid roughly $311 million when its own contractors caused the loss.

In May 2025 Coinbase disclosed that bribed overseas support contractors had taken data on about 69,000 customers, later used in social-engineering scams. No passwords, keys or funds were accessed directly. Coinbase refused a $20 million ransom and committed to reimburse retail customers who sent funds to the attackers.25,26

$311.2MCash paid in 2025 for reimbursements and related legal costs

SEC filing
The split between reimbursements and legal costs, and the number of customers paid, are undisclosed. Litigation is ongoing.6

Precise wording. Coinbase voluntarily paid roughly $311 million in reimbursements and related legal costs after the 2025 insider-data incident, and opened a US support hub.26

19 · Investor relevance

Coinbase’s most transparent product is also its least lucrative per customer.

Coinbase is listed on NASDAQ as COIN. Figures are for 2025 unless stated. This is not investment advice and makes no prediction.6

Retail trading is Coinbase’s largest revenue line, and Simple users pay higher average rates than Advanced users. Migration from Simple cost $384.4 million of consumer revenue in 2025; Coinbase One, USDC and staking add recurring revenue.6,7 From Q2 2026 Coinbase stopped reporting trading volume as a key metric.8

The connection. Migration toward transparent, lower-fee venues is a disclosed pressure on monetisation. Revenue-per-dollar is CHI arithmetic. CHI reading

About conduct

  • That Coinbase hides fees, charges hidden fees, secretly takes a spread or is deceptive.
  • That Coinbase One is fee-free or a scam, or that Coinbase forces users to subscribe.
  • That Coinbase freezes your money, routinely locks users out for months, or blocks withdrawals.
  • That Coinbase traps, owns, can take or steals customers’ crypto or staking yield, or makes it impossible to leave.

About the evidence

  • That Coinbase has been found guilty of hiding fees, or that regulators found its spreads deceptive.
  • The current Simple spread rate or fee schedule, which Coinbase does not publish.
  • When the Simple schedule was withdrawn, or when staking commission reached 35%.
  • How long restrictions actually last, or how many 2025 incident victims were reimbursed.

Final CHI assessment · Weakly supports

Leaving is easy. Knowing what you paid is the hard part.

Coinbase did not validate the strongest version of the CHI hypothesis. Leaving is generally straightforward, custody terms are strong, account termination still leaves a withdrawal window, and its most transparent trading venue is available to every customer for free.

The narrower finding sits at the point of purchase. Coinbase’s default Simple flow includes a variable spread whose rate it no longer publishes, whose excess Coinbase may retain, and which does not appear in transaction history. One tab away, Coinbase Advanced removes the spread and publishes the trading fee.

Coinbase’s own filings show that this difference matters economically: migration from Simple to Advanced and Coinbase One contributed to a $384.4 million decline in consumer transaction revenue.

Around that core are several post-commitment powers — changing staking commissions after assets are already staked, changing Coinbase One benefits, and broad restriction discretion — but the available evidence does not show systematic control over customer exit. No numerical CHI, CVI or CFS score has been assigned.
