Dropbox built a folder that quietly synced itself. It then built a platform around that folder — and, mostly, left the folder alone.
Dropbox's reputation was built on making one job disappear: put a file in a folder, it appears everywhere. Beginning around 2016, Dropbox expanded well beyond that job into collaboration, backup, e-signature, AI search, and workspace tools. A subsequent adversarial re-investigation under CHI Methodology v2.0 tested whether that expansion made the original sync loop itself worse. It largely did not: install, sign in, and drop a file in the Dropbox folder remains the same sequence it was in 2008, and the one measurable historical performance change on record — 2014's "streaming sync" — made transfers faster, not slower. The clearest exception is the 2019 limit restricting free Basic accounts to three linked devices, which reaches directly into the multi-device behavior Dropbox was built around. Evidence against hostility
Where Dropbox gets it right.
This gets equal weight to the concerns above, not a footnote. It is the evidence behind the CVI 65 and the CFS of +26: the honest description of Dropbox is not "simplicity abandoned for extraction."
Real price fell. Inflation-adjusted price for the flagship Plus tier declined roughly 23% since 2019 and roughly matches or beats 2008 levels, while storage grew dramatically faster than nominal price — the single most under-weighted finding on this page's prior version.
No advertising, no AI training on your files. Dropbox has never introduced third-party advertising into the core product, and explicitly, on the record, declines to let its AI partner train on customer content.
Core files are unusually portable. An ordinary folder a customer can copy elsewhere with no export tool — a materially stronger portability profile than the prior version of this page credited.
Smart Sync. It solved a legitimate large-library/local-storage problem without abandoning the folder metaphor: customers access huge cloud libraries without storing everything locally, while still interacting with familiar folders. The clearest internal counterexample to Complexity Creep.
Recovery, specifically. Expanded Rewind/version-history windows (extended alongside the 2019 repricing) and dedicated ransomware detection and recovery workflows — concrete mechanisms, not a generic claim, that directly extend the original "don't lose your files" value proposition.
Security posture improved. Two-factor authentication and U2F hardware keys post-date Dropbox's worst historical security failure (a 2012 breach, disclosed 2016); no comparable large-scale incident was found for the 2017–2026 period.
Willing to kill its own products. Mailbox, Carousel, Hackpad, Capture, and Passwords were all discontinued rather than accumulated indefinitely, generally with advance notice and export/preservation tooling — a real data point against unlimited platform accretion.
Advanced storage reversal, in context. Ending effectively-unlimited Advanced storage qualifies mechanically as Feature Erosion, but Dropbox's abuse rationale (crypto/Chia mining, pooled accounts, resale) is independently corroborated, not merely self-reported.

Final verdict
Dropbox largely protected its original "put file here, get file there" core experience while building a much broader and more complicated product portfolio around it. The surrounding product exhibits real Complexity Creep — Backup, Dash, Dropbox AI, Sign, Replay, and Paper each add a concept a customer must learn — but the base synchronization loop itself remains substantially intact, and has improved in several measurable ways: faster transfers since 2014, dramatically more storage per dollar, expanded recovery windows, ransomware detection, and stronger security since Dropbox's worst historical breach.
The most defensible criticism is therefore narrow, not broad. Dropbox introduced specific restrictions and real complexity around a core product that otherwise remained unusually durable: the 2019 three-device Basic limit reaches directly into the multi-device behavior Dropbox was built around, the 2023 Advanced-storage reversal is confirmed though well-mitigated by documented abuse, and Dropbox Backup has produced recurring, staff-acknowledged customer confusion around the Desktop/Documents folders that sits closer to the original folder metaphor than anything else on this page. This investigation began with a stronger suspicion of hostility than the evidence ultimately justified.
