OuraOura Inc. / Oura Health Oy · Filed for a US IPO, Sep 2026 · Oura Ring Gen3, Ring 4, Ring 4 Ceramic and Ring 5, Oura Membership, data export and integrations · Ring owners and members

Conclusion: Partially Supports · Scope: what an Oura Ring owner keeps, and what they can take out, after paying for the hardware · Not a finding that the subscription itself is hostile · No score assigned

You own the ring. Your data leaves it on Oura’s terms.

Oura runs a disclosed, stably priced subscription with several customer-favourable practices. The CHI finding is narrower than “a ring that needs a subscription”. A Gen3, Ring 4 or Ring 5 owner who stops paying keeps the ring, three daily scores and a delayed batch export, and loses every live route out: Apple Health, Health Connect, Strava, Natural Cycles and the Oura API. Gen2 owners keep those routes free. Reserved contractual control, a remote-disable capability and a battery arrangement with no published post-warranty path complete the finding.

01 · The current mechanism

Metered egress on owned hardware.

The CHI concern is not that Oura charges a subscription. Charging for analysis, new features and cloud processing is ordinary. The concern is where the line was drawn: the ring the customer owns keeps measuring, but the results can no longer leave Oura’s app in real time unless the customer keeps paying.

What the customer bought · stays with them

The ring, three numbers and a delayed copy.

  • The physical ring; Oura’s Terms do not purport to retain title1
  • Readiness, Sleep and Activity as three daily scores2
  • Ring battery, basic profile, app settings and Explore content2
  • All data kept on Oura’s servers until the account is deleted2
  • A full CSV export through the Membership Hub, which can take up to 10 days11
What the customer rents · stops when payment stops

Everything that explains the numbers, and every live exit.

  • Heart rate, HRV, temperature, SpO2, sleep stages, graphs and Trends2,12
  • Stress, cardiovascular, women’s-health and metabolic features2
  • Apple Health and Health Connect sync4,5
  • Strava and Natural Cycles6,7
  • The Oura API, for the owner and for any partner app9,10
The ring keeps recording. What it records reaches the customer’s wider ecosystem only while they pay.

Why the egress line matters. Charging for interpretation is defensible. Writing an already-computed sleep stage to Apple Health is a different service, and Oura provides it to Gen2 owners free. CHI reads the egress gate as what keeps the free tier from working as a usable alternative. CHI reading

02 · Strongest findings, ranked

Eight current findings, in order of weight.

  1. Live data egress is membership-gated on Gen3+ hardware.Apple Health, Health Connect, Strava and Natural Cycles are each listed as available for “Gen2” and “Gen3 or later with active membership”. Without membership, “you cannot access the Oura API”; batch export remains.2,4,5,6,7,9Current
  2. The non-member residual is narrow.“Without an active membership, you’ll only be able to see your three daily Oura scores (Readiness, Activity, and Sleep), ring battery, basic profile information, app settings, and the Explore content.”2Current · disclosed
  3. The Terms reserve control over what will require payment.“ŌURA reserves the sole discretion to determine which Services or portions thereof require payment”, and may “modify or discontinue, temporarily or permanently, the Services”.1Reserved · not exercised against purchased rings
  4. Oura can disable specific rings.“A disabled ring can’t pair with the Oura App or collect new data.” Warranty-replaced originals are not recalled and may be disabled; no public serial-status check was found.14,15Current
  5. A Ring 4 battery issue was disclosed in an IPO filing.“Certain cohorts of Oura Ring 4 have exhibited battery performance issues”, driving an $84.4 million increase in warranty expense. No public consumer notice identifying affected rings was found.17,20Current
  6. No repair or post-warranty path.Sealed battery excluded from warranty; no battery service, repair or trade-in; one-year US warranty.15,17,19Current · category context applies
  7. Oura on the Web was discontinued on 5 October 2026.Its correlation tool and instant export have no in-app equivalent. Data remains exportable.2,22Current · service removal
  8. Re-consent is required to keep using the app.“After that date, you can’t use the Oura App until you accept” the Terms effective 4 November 2026.13Announced · lower weight

Not on this list: the membership price, cancellation, hardware support and generational re-gating. On each, the evidence cuts in Oura’s favour (sections 09–12). CHI reading

03 · What happens if I stop paying?

The ring keeps working. What it tells you shrinks to three numbers.

Cancelling is easy and nothing is deleted. What a Gen3, Ring 4 or Ring 5 owner can still use afterwards is set out in Oura’s own support article.2

You keep

Re-subscribing restores everything. “Once you re-enroll in Oura Membership, your data and account information will immediately be accessible again.”2 The non-member residual has been essentially unchanged since the Gen3 launch in October 2021; Explore content is the only later addition.2,49

Precise wording. Oura does not disable a ring for non-payment. That it keeps recording is CHI’s inference: the three scores need nightly data. Whether lapsed owners can view past scores or receive firmware updates is not stated. CHI reading

04 · Data egress and interoperability

You can always get a copy. You cannot keep it flowing.

Two different things get called “data portability”. A batch export gives a copy of what exists; live interoperability keeps the ring feeding the apps the customer uses. Oura protects the first for everyone and sells the second.

The data itself is not locked away. Oura’s Privacy Policy says it “does not sell or rent your personal information”, and neither it nor the Terms claims ownership of members’ health data; in 2025 Oura added that it “will never sell or rent your health data, including to the government”.38,39 Personal API tokens were withdrawn in December 2025; members now register an OAuth application, a higher bar for non-developers.10

Not established. When the gate on the API and platform sync began, and whether Gen3 non-members ever had that access, could not be confirmed. This page does not say those routes were taken from anyone; it says they are membership features today. CHI reading

05 · What Oura still controls after the sale

Oura has kept wide discretion. It has used little of it.

Oura’s contract is silent on who owns the ring and explicit about who controls everything around it. Nothing purports to retain title to the hardware; everything the customer interacts with is defined as licensed “Services”.1

Terms §IV

What will require payment

  • “We may make changes to, suspend, or discontinue Paid Services at any time for any reason.”1
  • “ŌURA reserves the sole discretion to determine which Services or portions thereof require payment.”1
Terms §§VIII, XIII, XIX

Whether services continue

  • No warranty “that the Services will continue for any specific period of time”.1
  • Oura may “modify or discontinue, temporarily or permanently, the Services or any portion thereof”; the user’s “only recourse is to cease using the Services”.1
Terms §II · update notice

How the ring may be used

  • Users may not “circumvent, bypass, disable, degrade, or otherwise interfere with any access controls”, including subscription restrictions.1
  • New Terms take effect 4 Nov 2026: “you can’t use the Oura App until you accept”.13

The investor-facing version. Oura’s September 2026 S-1 says the company has “maintained consistent pricing” since 2021, and that “we expect to have opportunities to evolve pricing and packaging over the long term in a manner aligned with delivered value”.17 That is a stated intention, not an implemented change.

Re-consent, in proportion. Requiring acceptance of updated terms is ordinary for apps. It matters more here because the ring has no screen or export path outside the app, so declining means setting the hardware aside. Oura gave about three weeks’ notice and says the update “does not change how Oura collects, uses, or protects member data”.1,13

Precise wording. No instance was found of Oura using these clauses to gate a function a ring was sold with, or to raise an existing member’s price. This is reserved control, not exercised control. CHI reading

06 · Remote disable and second-hand risk

Physical possession is not the same as a working ring.

Oura makes resale easy in the ways that usually matter: published hand-over steps, a factory reset, and no activation or transfer fee.16 The asymmetry is a per-device blocklist the buyer cannot see.

“A disabled ring can’t pair with the Oura App or collect new data.”

Oura support, “Disabled Oura Ring”, updated 7 Oct 2026
Oura may disable a ring when5 triggersA warranty replacement was issued; a loss or shipping issue was reported; a prior purchase issue; a hardware or safety concern; or an unauthorised-reseller ring linked to theft, fraud or account misuse14
After a warranty replacementNot recalledThe original “may be fully disabled”, and owners are asked: “Please do not sell, gift, or transfer your original Oura Ring after receiving a replacement”15
Before buying usedNo check foundNo public serial-status tool was found; “Oura can only verify rings bought from Oura or authorized retail partners”14

The policy has a legitimate purpose: it stops a replaced ring being used twice and discourages resale of lost or stolen units. In the warranty-replacement case, its cost falls on a good-faith second buyer with no way to check the ring’s history. Oura offers a review route; rings disabled after a loss report “may not be eligible for re-enablement”. Locate, for finding a lost ring, is a membership feature.14,45 Warranty cover itself does not pass to second owners, which is ordinary across the category.15

September 2026 press relayed second-hand buyers’ reports of rings disabled weeks after purchase; Oura did not comment.41 Allegation The finding rests on Oura’s own policy pages, not those reports.

Comparison. Peloton charges $95 to activate used equipment; WHOOP delivers hardware inside the membership. Oura’s resale structure is the cleanest of the three; the blocklist is the exception. Peloton · WHOOP CHI reading

07 · Battery, warranty and repairability

A sealed battery, a one-year warranty and no published path after it.

Every major smart ring is sealed, and CHI does not treat that as hostile in itself. The issue is what Oura offers once a battery wears or fails outside warranty, and how it communicated a battery problem it disclosed to investors.

US warranty1 year
EU / UK2 years, by statute
BatteriesExcluded as consumables
Battery service or repairNone
Trade-inNone

Oura’s warranty covers the original purchaser for one year from delivery in the US, extended where local law requires; it excludes “consumable parts, including batteries”.1,15 Oura publishes per-charge battery life and care advice but no expected lifespan in years or cycles, and no degradation threshold that would trigger service.19 The only end-of-life route is recycling, with no credit: “We do not currently operate a formal trade-in or repeat purchaser discount program.”17,46 A June 2026 teardown found the Ring 5’s shell epoxy-bonded around a 10.5 mAh cell, with no practical way to replace the battery without damaging the ring.21 An Extend protection plan adds accidental-damage cover in the US at $45 for two years or $60 for three.33

The Ring 4 battery cohorts

“Certain cohorts of Oura Ring 4 have exhibited battery performance issues, which has resulted in increased warranty claims and warranty-related costs as we have replaced affected Oura Rings free of charge under our warranty and, in some cases, outside of the warranty period.”

Oura Inc., Form S-1, filed 3 Sep 2026

The filing attributes an $84.4 million increase in warranty expense to these cohorts.17 Oura replaced rings at scale, sometimes beyond warranty, and this page credits that in full. No public consumer notice identifying affected rings, purchase windows or an eligibility rule was found; Oura’s Ring 4 battery page, updated 21 September 2026, does not mention the issue.20 An owner who did not contact support had no published way to check whether they were covered.

CHI arithmetic. Weekly charging is about 52 cycles a year; small lithium cells typically lose noticeable capacity after a few hundred, roughly three to five years. A three-year Ring 4 owner spends about $349 plus $210 in membership, with two of those years outside warranty and no repair path. Oura called December 2025 overheating reports “isolated incidents”; no recall was found. CHI arithmetic

08 · Oura on the Web shutdown

Oura’s February 2024 post marketed the dashboard’s correlation coefficient, 5-minute HRV and resting heart rate, longer ranges and export.22 It was a Gen3+ member feature, so everyone who lost it was a paying hardware owner. No price change, credit or substitute accompanied the removal.11,12

Notice. A banner appeared in the support article on 22 June 2026 saying the dashboard would close “later this year”. Press relayed a support representative’s informal “until September”.23 Press No blog post, press release or in-app release note announcing the closure was found. The API and its developer documentation survived the shutdown.10

Precise wording. This is the one case in the record where Oura removed functionality from existing paying customers, and it was a web service, not a feature of the ring. Data availability was preserved; analysis and convenience were reduced. Severity: moderate. CHI reading

09 · Membership and price history

Five years, three hardware generations, one membership price.

Paid membership arrived with Gen3 on 26 October 2021 at $5.99 a month, with six free months for new buyers. Gen1 and Gen2 had been sold with full app functionality and no recurring fee.24,25

The day after Ring 4 was announced, Oura confirmed that “if you wish to purchase the new Oura Ring 4, your membership will not be affected”; lifetime benefits now “seamlessly transfer to any new or replacement ring”.2,26 The trial cut applied only to later purchases; its exact date is not established.

Cost in context. A $349 Ring 4 on the annual plan costs about $559 over three years and $699 over five. That three-year cost is close to WHOOP’s cheapest tier and $130–$260 above the subscription-free Samsung, Ultrahuman and RingConn rings. Oura is the only major smart ring whose full function requires a paid membership.3,42 CHI arithmetic

10 · Hardware generations and support

Old rings are frozen, not switched off. Gen3 is still current.

Every software feature Oura has launched since October 2021 carries the same gate: “Gen3 or later with active membership”. Nothing is reserved for Ring 4 or Ring 5 except multi-ring support.27,30

A 2021 Gen3 has since received Daytime Stress and Resilience (2023), Cardiovascular Age and Cardio Capacity (2024), Symptom Radar, Oura Advisor and, in 2026, Health Radar, Menopause Insights and Live Activity.36,37,44,27 Gen2’s exclusion has a stated sensor basis for most of these, and Gen2 owners never pay. In 2021 Oura promised Gen2 updates “for up to 2 years post Gen3 release”; its last Gen2 firmware is dated October 2022 and its last Gen2 iOS app June 2022.28,29,50

Cadence and upgrades. No upgrade discount was offered for Ring 4 or Ring 5, and Ring 5 followed Ring 4 after 20 months, against 36 before. Oura’s chief executive said in 2025: “we don’t actually need you to upgrade the hardware because you’re a subscriber”.17,43 Oura’s contract publishes no minimum support period for any generation.1 CHI reading

11 · Cancellation, returns and refunds

Leaving is simple. The terms are ordinary.

Members “may cancel at any time, online and without any further steps”, in the app or the web Membership Hub. Access runs to the end of the paid period, data is kept, and re-enrolment is instant.1,2

In the customer’s favour

  • Self-service cancellation in two places; no retention step documented1,2
  • Hardware returns within 30 days, for any reason, with a prepaid label31,32
  • No restocking fee; a free sizing kit before the ring ships31
  • A 28-day grace period after a failed payment18
  • Outside the US, a 14-day full refund of unused membership1

Ordinary limits

  • No pro-rata refund on annual plans after the free month; no pause option2
  • A card is required to start the free month, which then converts automatically48
  • One return or exchange per item; exchanges are size-only; no Gen3 exchanges31
  • Membership must be cancelled separately when a ring is returned31
  • Binding individual arbitration and a class waiver in the US1

A California auto-renewal class action, Lekhadia v. Oura Health Oy, filed in December 2025, alleged inadequate renewal disclosures and cancellation mechanisms. Oura moved to compel arbitration in April 2026, and the plaintiffs voluntarily dismissed the case two weeks later.34 Allegation The claims were never tested. Two pending 2026 class actions concern sleep-accuracy marketing, not post-purchase control.35 No FTC, state or European regulator action was found.

The balance. No disproportionate exit friction was established. The 30-day any-reason return exceeds the EU and UK 14-day statutory minimum. CHI reading

12 · Counterweights

Why the conclusion is Partially Supports, not Supports.

The strongest evidence against a hostile reading, credited in full. On price, support and exit, Oura’s record is better than its category’s.

Price

Held for five years

  • $5.99 / $69.99 unchanged in USD and EUR since 2021; S-1: “we have maintained consistent pricing”.17,24
  • Canadian and Australian annual prices lowered between July 2025 and October 2026.3
  • Fee changes require advance notice and allow a free exit.1
Support

Old rings keep getting new features

  • Gen3 from 2021 receives 2026 features, including Health Radar.27,44
  • No generational re-gating; only multi-ring support is Ring 4+.30
  • Gen2 has never been charged and keeps its integrations.2
Promises

Commitments kept

  • 2021 lifetime memberships honoured through Ring 4 and Ring 5.2,26
  • No feature removed from any ring’s original sold feature set.27
  • Ring 4 battery replacements at scale, some outside warranty.17
Exit and data

Easy to leave, data kept

  • Batch export without membership; data retained after cancellation.2,11
  • One-link cancellation; 30-day any-reason returns, no restocking fee.1,31
  • No transfer or activation fee for second owners.16
Privacy and regulation

Conservative claims

  • “Does not sell or rent your personal information”; denial of data flows to government on the record.38,39
  • Claims CE marking only for Fertile Window in the EU; no FDA clearance is claimed or held.1,40
  • Blood-pressure features labelled as wellness signals without mmHg readings.2
Disclosure

The membership is not hidden

  • The non-member residual has been published and stable since 2021.2,49
  • Activation requires choosing a plan before any charge.48
  • Caveat: the Ring 5 product page does not show the $5.99 figure.47

The balance. These counterweights defeat any broad claim of hostility. They do not change the egress gate, the reserved discretion, the blocklist’s effect on second-hand buyers or the absence of a published battery path. CHI reading

Hardware brings customers in. Membership keeps the revenue.

Figures are from Oura’s September 2026 S-1 and S-1/A, for fiscal years ending 30 September. This is not investment advice.

Revenue, 9 months to Jun 2026$1,214.5M
Membership share · gross margin20% · 89%
Paid members, Jun 20265.0M
Activations converting to paid~94%
12-month paid retention~85%

The S-1 describes the model plainly: “Hardware sales are designed to offset customer acquisition costs at the point of purchase, while Oura Membership subscription extends lifetime value through predictable, recurring revenue.” Paid members grew from 1.3 million in September 2024 to 5.0 million in June 2026. The same filing records the warranty charge and the expectation that pricing and packaging may “evolve”.17,18

The connection. A free tier that about 94% of activating customers move past is not functioning as a meaningful alternative to membership. That is CHI’s interpretation of the figure, not a statement by Oura; the 85% retention rate on a service that cancels in one click is also a genuine signal of value. CHI reading

15 · What this page does not claim

What is not established.

About conduct

  • That Oura disables or bricks rings for non-payment; a lapsed ring keeps its three-score function.
  • That Oura owns customers’ rings, or sells or misuses their health data.
  • That Oura traps customers; cancellation is self-service.
  • That Oura deliberately shortens battery life or practises planned obsolescence.
  • That Oura concealed the Ring 4 battery issue; the finding is that no public consumer notice identifying affected rings was found.
  • That Oura has raised its membership price in USD or EUR.

About the evidence

  • That Gen3 non-members once had API, Apple Health or Health Connect access that was later removed; that history is not established.
  • That second-hand reports of disabled rings are representative; they are press-relayed allegations.
  • Any date for the end of Gen1 support, or for the six-to-one-month trial change.
  • That any Oura feature is FDA-cleared; only Fertile Window is CE-marked, in the EU.
  • That the auto-renewal claims in Lekhadia were proven; the case was dismissed untested.
  • That any feature was removed from a ring’s original sold feature set; the only removal found is the web service.

Final CHI assessment · Partially Supports

You own the ring. Your data leaves it on Oura’s terms.

Oura is a well-run subscription business. Its membership price has not risen in five years, a 2021 ring still receives its newest features, the 2021 lifetime promise has been kept, Gen2 owners have never paid, and cancelling takes one link. This assessment credits all of that in full.

The finding is narrow. A Gen3, Ring 4 or Ring 5 owner who stops paying keeps the ring, three daily scores and a delayed batch export, and loses every live route for their data to reach Apple Health, Health Connect, Strava, Natural Cycles or their own software. Around that sit reserved control over what will require payment, a remote-disable capability whose cost can fall on second-hand buyers, no published post-warranty battery path, and an SEC-disclosed Ring 4 battery issue with no public consumer notice found.

Those structural asymmetries all operate after the customer has paid. The counterweights keep the conclusion at Partially Supports. No numerical CHI, CVI or CFS score has been assigned.

Limits carried onto this page. CHI did not hold an Oura account, so the non-member app, export files and cancellation flow were not observed first-hand. The Internet Archive was unavailable, so earlier versions of Oura’s support pages could not be compared; for that reason, when the membership gate on the API and platform sync began, and whether Gen3 non-members ever had that access, are not established. Whether Oura has issued any notice to Ring 4 owners about the battery cohorts, the date Gen1 support ended, and the date the free period moved from six months to one are also not established. Second-hand disabled-ring reports are treated as allegations.

Status. Oura pages read up to 17 October 2026; research frozen the same day. The full research dossier is CHI’s controlling source for this page. No numerical CHI, CVI or CFS score has been assigned; scoring is reserved for a later calibration stage.

Hardware you buy, and what the subscription decides it can still do.

Oura is assessed on what a ring owner keeps and can take with them after paying, not on whether wearables should carry subscriptions. WHOOP and Peloton are the closest comparisons.
